In an update to a story we first brought you in , a suspect has been arrested and charged in the 2015 murder of Dakota Rico on Saginaw’s South Side.

On Tuesday, the Saginaw County Prosecutor’s Office charged Marcos Torres, 25, with an open count of murder, a single count of possessing a firearm as a felon and two counts of possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony-third offense.

“This new evidence made a significant difference in establishing Marcos Torres as the man who murdered Dakota Rico,” said Saginaw County Prosecuting Attorney John McColgan Jr., in a statement.

On Sept. 2, 2015, Rico, 21, was found shot to death in the driver’s seat of a vehicle at the corner of Douglass and Youmans shortly after midnight. The case had remained an open investigation since.

According to the prosecutor’s office, on Saturday, Jan. 8, law enforcement were alerted to new information in the case. This new evidence led to the arrest of Torres, who police investigated as a suspect after the homicide.

Torres was arraigned in a Saginaw County court Thursday and entered a not-guilty plea. He was jailed on a $450,000 bond.

The family of Dakota Rico says helped lead to an arrest.
