In this update, the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office says they have found a man they say broke into a home and stole a car in Leelanau County.

Leelanau County deputies were called to a residence in the 12000 block of South West Bayshore Drive around 7:16 a.m. Thursday on reports of a home invasion and unlawful driving away of an automobile.

Deputies were advised by the reporting party that an unknown male subject entered their residence during the night. While in the residence, the suspect helped himself to food, alcohol, clothing items, and car keys before loading it all up into the victim’s car and stealing it. The victim was able to show deputies videos of the incident which later helped identify the perpetrator.

During the course of the initial investigation, the victim was also able to provide a live notification, via an app, of the current location of the stolen vehicle. Deputies were able to relay this information to authorities in Grand Traverse County, who located the suspect and were able to make contact with him. The driver was subsequently arrested and transported to the Leelanau County Jail. The vehicle will be returned to the owner undamaged.

Deputies are also following up on a larceny report from the Discovery Pier in Elmwood Twp. that occurred around 3 a.m. Thursday, where a male subject matching the description of the suspect, was witnessed stealing a cart of goods from the dock area.

The suspect has been identified as a 30-year-old male out of Shelby Township. A report will be completed and forwarded to the Leelanau County Prosecutor’s Office for review on charges of first degree home invasion,  breaking and entering with intent of a motor vehicle, unlawful driving away, and habitual offender, fourth Offense.

Late last week, this same individual was charged with defrauding an innkeeper in the Suttons Bay area. He has yet to be arraigned in court on that incident.
