People In Mecosta County Are Cleaning Up Tornado Damage

People in Mecosta County spent their Sunday cleaning up the damage from a tornado that swept through the area Saturday afternoon.

Barns were lifted from the ground and tree branches scattered the roads.

Cheri Chapin, the owner of Chapin Family Farms in Remus, said she’s devastated by the destruction the tornado has caused.

She said overall they lost one cow in the storm and the rest are expected to be ok.

“We had a vet crew come out from Lakeview Veterinary Services in Lakeview and they worked on animals until eleven o’clock last night,” she said. “Right now, the cattle are safe. Now, it’s just a question of cleaning up, keeping everyone safe, away from any power lines and debris.”

Chapin says the community has been nothing but helpful.

People flooded the farm this morning to help pick up the pieces from yesterday’s storm.

“We’ve had neighbors dropping off food and water,” Chapin said. “Just a wonderful community.”

Other farms and houses in the area experienced damage.

Trees and power lines laid in the road, as well as debris from houses.

Power crews worked to restore the electricity Sunday morning.

Tony Wernette of Mecosta County was one of the many who spent his Sunday helping clean up Chapin Family Farms.

Although the damage was terrible for some, he says he was one of the lucky ones who didn’t get any on his property.

“You got to get cleaned up really quick if you’re going to keep operating,” he said, “A lot of people came together to help clean things up and get it going again.”

Over the weekend, there was a total of five tornados that touched down in Michigan: one in Mecosta County, two in Ionia County, one in Huron County and one in Clare County.
