Second Chance Mushers: Northern Michigan Husky Rescue

Caring for one or two dogs requires plenty of time, energy and money. Now imagine for a second caring for fourteen dogs! Sarah Dobbrastine is the proud mother of 14 beautiful and quirky huskies.

Over the years, one by one, these rescues have made their way into Sarah’s heart and found a place in her home. “Most of mine… Not all of them have been mistreated so they have certain quirks and if you get to know them you’ll get along great! They’re all wonderful dogs,” explains Dobbrastine.

If there’s snow on the ground, you can count on this pack pulling a sled. “It’s a way to release energy. Some of these dogs’ behavioral issues you get are from pent up energy and they just need to let it go. Huskies are independent but loving- they’re strong-willed- sometimes stubborn and I’m stubborn so maybe that’s why we get along so well,” says Dobbrastine.

You can find Sarah and the pups at Schuss Mountain at Shanty Creek Resort offering dogsled rides this winter to the public on Fridays from 6-8 pm, and Saturday/Sunday during the day.

With the energy that comes with the breed comes plenty of affection with no strings attached. Dobbrastine says, “They learn to forgive and love more than any human possibly could. I wish I could help more but I’m kind of at my stretch right now with as many as I’ve taken on,”

Caring for 14 dogs currently in her care, with all ages and ailments, can be financially challenging explains Dobbrastine. “It’s been a tough tough year. We’ve had medical after medical problems. It’s just we can’t get our feet under us even if we try.”

Sarah is determined to give her furry friends the best she can because she knows they will do the same for her. “They love you no matter what. If you have a bad day, they’ll still love you, if you get upset with them they forgive you five seconds later. They’re just incredible. I wish we could be more like them,” says Dobbrastine.
