California Considers Text Message Tax

California residents are saying OMG about a new plan to put a fee on text messages.

Nobody’s laughing out loud about the new proposal in California. State regulators want to slap a fee on text messaging.

The amount of the surcharge is still up for discussion, but it would likely be billed as a flat fee rather than a charge per text.

The money from that texting fee would go towards a program to offer phone service for low income families.

While some people say if the fee isn’t too much they’re not totally against it, consumer groups think there are other ways to address the issue of low income communication.

The wireless industry isn’t a fan of this proposal because a text tax would likely steer consumers to free messaging services.

California’s Public Utilities Commission will vote on the proposal next month.
