After serving 22 years as the Cheboygan County sheriff, and 35 years in the department, Sheriff Dale Clarmont announced his retirement.

He will be leaving his role as sheriff on January 31, 2023.

Sheriff Clarmont graduated Cheboygan Area High School in 1979 with honors then entered the United States Navy for eight years as an Aviation Electronics Technician before returning to Cheboygan to raise his family.

Sheriff Clarmont began his career in the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Department in November 1987 as a dispatcher.

He was then promoted though the ranks of the department as a corrections officer, deputy, detective, and then was elected sheriff in November 2000.

Sheriff Clarmont says he has accomplished the goal he set out when he first ran for sheriff.

“My whole goal when I first ran for sheriff was just to make it a little bit better,” he says. “And I think I’m leaving now after 22 years. I think I’ve made the department a little bit better. I have a great professional team, second to none.”

Sheriff Clarmont is now recommending Undersheriff Timothy Cook to be appointed sheriff for the remainder of his term.
