Three Men in Jail After Traffic Stop for Speeding

Three men have been arrested after a traffic stop for going 29 mph over the speed limit led to a Michigan State Police trooper finding syringes and empty pill bottles in the car.

On Nov. 1 around 3:17 p.m., a trooper from the MSP Gaylord Post stopped a car on northbound I-75 near M-68 Highway for traveling 104 mph in a 75-mph zone. As the car began to stop, the trooper saw the driver climb into the rear passenger seat while the front seat passenger moved to the driver’s seat. The trooper identified the driver, who moved into the back seat, as Shawn Wilson, 32, from Newport. The passenger who moved into the driver’s seat was Christopher Meade, 28, from Sault Ste. Marie. A third passenger in the car was identified as Bradley Phillips, 28, from Detroit who was seated in the back seat.

Meade appeared to be under the influence, and after failing sobriety tests was put under arrest. Wilson, who was the original driver, did not have a valid driver’s license. During the search of the car, troopers found multiple syringes and empty pill bottles. This lead to all three men being placed under arrest and lodged in the Cheboygan County Jail.

MSP says that during the booking process, they also found baggies containing suspected fentanyl hidden inside of Wilson’s sock.

The three men have been arraigned.

Wilson was charged with one count possession controlled substance, one count bringing contraband into prison, one count reckless driving and one count driving while license suspended. He was given a $250,000 cash bond.

Meade was charged with one count operating while under the influence and his bond was set at $10,000.

Phillips was charged with one count possession controlled substance and his bond was set at $10,000.

The trooper was assisted by a deputy from the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Tuscarora Township Police Department. An MSP K9 team also responded to help with the search of the car.
