Sweet Streets: MDOT Request Leads Sault Ste. Marie Business Owner to Leave Out Lollipops

A business owner in Sault Ste. Marie is making the Soo a sweeter place because of a request from MDOT.

The Michigan Department of Transportation gave Justin Knepper some strict rules to comply with before he could remodel the front of his building in Sault Ste. Marie.

The building is on Ashmun Street, which is also a business spur, meaning the sidewalk is not MDOT regulated since it’s a right of way.

Knepper sent in for all of the proper paperwork, and the response he got was something unexpected.

The last rule on page three was “all pedestrians shall be given a lollipop for their troubles.”

“I got a little box and we put it up and then I sent a picture to M-DOT and the guy said I can’t believe you did that,” said Knepper. “It was just an inside joke to see if one of the M-DOT engineers would catch it!”

Knepper and his daughter have already filled the container several times since late July, with more than 200 lollipops so far.

Knepper says the relationship between him and MDOT is just fine.
