Gov. Whitmer Celebrates Passage of CHIPS Act With Representatives, President Biden Joins Virtually

President Biden joined Governor Gretchen Whitmer virtually Tuesday to celebrate the passage of the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, which aims to boost domestic chip production.

The act will fund $52 billion in incentives to boost domestic semiconductor production and research, $2 billion of which is dedicated to incentivizing production of the “mature node” semiconductors used by automakers and parts supplies.

“The bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act will make a once-in-a-century investment in American industry to create and protect tens of thousands of jobs, bring supply chain from China to Michigan, and help lower costs for working families on electronics, cars, and so much more,” said Governor Whitmer.

Since passing the historic economic development legislation, Governor Whitmer landed a $7 billion investment from GM creating and retaining 5,000 jobs. Earlier this year, Ford invested $2 billion creating 3,200 jobs.

“It was because the auto industry is the heart and soul of the nation. It was about the auto industry legacy it’s about the future, about American’s future. One of the reasons I’m so excited about the Chips Bill is because it sees that future for decades to come,” President Biden said.

President Biden had planned to visit Michigan in person, but stayed in Washington due to testing positive for COVID-19 for the second time.

They were also joined by representatives from Michigan-based polysilicon manufacturer Hemlock Semiconductor, labor unions, Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters, Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05).
