Newberry Man Leads Mackinaw City Police On Multi-County Chase

A Newberry man is in jail after Mackinaw City police say he led them on a chase through two counties.

Officers say the driver and a passenger were speeding in a construction zone on I-75 Monday night.

When they tried to pull him over, they say he took off south on US-31 in Emmet County, hitting speeds of over 100 mph.

The chase took police into Cheboygan County where they found the vehicle in a ditch. The driver and passenger were nowhere in sight.

On Tuesday, the passenger was picked up walking north on I-75.

Police determined that the driver was in another vehicle headed north on the Mackinac Bridge. He was stopped and taken into custody.

The 36-year-old Newberry man was charged with fleeing from police, reckless driving, and driving on a suspended license.

At the time of his arrest, he also had a warrant out for violating parole.
