Michigan has its share of wicked weather which can cause power outages and a little preparation goes a long way.

Make sure your family is ready for whatever the seasons have in store by making an emergency preparedness plan. has some suggestions:

10 TIPS TO BUILD AN EMERGENCY PLAN

  1. If you have electrically-powered medical equipment, ask your physician, nurse or equipment provider about an emergency plan before an outage occurs
  2. Have at least a three-day supply of food, water and medication on hand
  3. Stock enough supplies for infants and pets
  4. Store first aid kits in the home and in the car
  5. Keep flashlights, a portable radio and plenty of fresh batteries handy
  6. Make sure family members know how to get in touch with each other during an emergency
  7. Store emergency contacts in your mobile phone
  8. Know where your cell phone charger is
  9. Hire a licensed electrician to install a transfer switch for your generators. See Consumers Energy’s  for additional tips
  10. Keep cash on hand in case ATMs and credit card machines are not working
