Kinross Grass Fire Destroys Storage Area and Contents, Damages Back of Trailer

A fire that started in a Chippewa County fire pit got out of control Saturday.

Around 3:30 p.m., the owners of a Kinross property say a gust of wind spread the fire to nearby leaves.

Two men tried to put out the fire, but were unable to. One was injured by inhaling smoke.

Kinross, Pickford and Rudyard Volunteer Fire Departments along with the DNR responded.

The fire destroyed a storage area and its contents, as well as damaged the back of a trailer.

“The wind just took the flame and the flame caught on to another leaf and it went up after that and got uncontrollable,” said homeowner Christian Saunders. “Went up way faster that I think it would.”

Fire crews say it’s a reminder of how things can go wrong quickly when fire danger is high.
