Harbor Springs Public Schools Receiving New Health Curriculum

One northern Michigan school district is re-prioritizing health and sex education.

Harbor Springs Public Schools are finally receiving updated health curriculum after more than 30 years.

After discovering that their current resources did not meet the state requirements, the school district invested in new curriculum for teaching HIV and AIDs education.

All health teachers on staff will undergo additional training to teach new courses.

Harbor Springs Public Schools Superintendent Michael Behrmann says this will be geared towards educating their younger students in Shay Elementary and Harbor Springs Middle School.

“Our previous resources were very outdated, some of them actually going back to the 80s, we were left with one video that was on a VHS tape that was twisted and no replacement existed for that video,” said Behrmann.

They feel confident that mandatory health education will now be met at every grade level.

Harbor Springs Public Schools also encourage community members to come out and vote on May 3 for their new bond proposal.
