Michigan State Police Investigating Mason County Reckless Driving Crash

Michigan State Police are investigating a reckless driving incident in Mason County stemming from multiple hit and run crashes that happened Tuesday night.

Troopers say Mason-Oceana 911 received multiple calls regarding a reckless driver who was dangerously traveling west on US-10 in the eastbound lanes.

They say their preliminary investigation found that a 2014 Ford Explorer initially struck two separate parked cars at the Scottville Wesco before fleeing the scene and traveling west on US-10 towards Ludington.

The driver was observed by witnesses to be drifting back and forth from the oncoming eastbound lanes of US-10 to the westbound lanes and shoulder of US-10.

Troopers say witnesses reported seeing the driver crash into the back of a moving commercial truck and trailer, which had been traveling in the right lane of westbound US-10 just west of Stile Road in Amber Township.

After striking the moving truck, the driver lost control, crossed over five lanes of traffic, drove off the road to the left and came to a stop in a marsh.

A Trooper and a Mason County Deputy removed the driver from the car, which had heavy smoke coming from the engine and interior.

Troopers say the Ford was being driven by a 59-year-old Shelby woman, who was transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries. She was kept overnight for observation.

No injuries were reported by the occupants of the three other cars.

Troopers say alcohol is being investigated as a possible contributing factor to the crash, and the right lane of travel for eastbound US-10 was closed for about 40 minutes while law enforcement investigated the series of events leading to the final crash.

Any witnesses to the crash that did not speak to troopers at the scene are to contact Michigan State Police Hart Post at (231) 873-2171. The crash remains under investigation.
