Lt. Gov. Gilchrist Reports Recommendations from State of Michigan Coronavirus Racial Disparities Task Force

Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist, along with the state’s Coronavirus Racial Disparities Task Force, released their new recommendations to protect communities of color from the spread of COVID-19.

The task force also outlined successes they’ve had in the past two years.

The goal of the task force was to reduce health-based racial disparities across the state due to COVID-19.

The recommendations from the task force include continuing collecting data to understand racial disparities in healthcare, track Covid-19 infection rates throughout the state, and decrease the amount of people underinsured and uninsured.

Some of their successes include boosting primary care for those who do not have a primary care doctor, increasing the access of COVID tests and vaccines, and reaching out to internet desert communities.

The task force is hoping to continue the work they’ve established in the last two years.

“The recommendations in this report going forward are going to make a difference right now in the health of communities of color across Michigan,” said Lt. Gov. Gilchrist. “With these recommendations, we’re taking another step towards a more equitable, more just, more safe and more responsive Michigan for everyone.”

The task force also developed two additional work groups that provided input and recommendations related to racial disparities in environmental justice and telemedicine.
