Reverend Robert J. Rose, a former Bishop of the Diocese of Gaylord and the diocese’s second bishop, has passed away. He was 92.

Bishop Rose was ordained a priest in 1955 and installed as the second bishop of the Diocese of Gaylord in 1981. He was installed as bishop of Grand Rapids in 1989 and remained there until his retirement in 2003.

“It is with deep sadness that we share this news of Bishop Rose’s passing,” said Bishop Walter A. Hurley, Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Gaylord. “He was a devoted shepherd to the people of the Diocese of Gaylord and faithfully served the people of Grand Rapids for many years.

“In this moment of sadness, we reflect in profound gratitude for Bishop Rose’s spiritual leadership, which touched the lives of so many. From his early years as a newly ordained priest, throughout his episcopal ministry, and until his final hour, his devotion to our Lord, and to his vocation, was evident to all around him. We can rejoice in confident hope that he is now united with the Lord he so deeply loved and faithfully served.”

Bishop Rose passed away Wednesday.

The Diocese of Gaylord will announce funeral arrangements in the coming days.
