Old City Hall in Cadillac Starting New Chapter and Remembering History

The Old City Hall in Cadillac has been standing for more than a century. With the help of the community, it will continue to be filled with life.

Five years ago, Robb Munger from Grand Rapids decided to invest in a town he grew to love by purchasing the Old Cadillac City Hall building.

“My passion was to come to Cadillac and help make a positive difference. I thought buying this building and then renovating it, improving it and making it something that could last for a long time,” said Munger. “It was really on my bucket list.”

Putting words into action, after three years, the renovation is complete. A ribbon-cutting was held Thursday night to celebrate the milestone.

“Let’s just say they really, really needed a renovation,” said Kathy Adair Morin, Executive Director of Cadillac Area Visitors Bureau. “One of the spaces had some plum purple carpet.”

“It was remodeled in the eighties, and it really hadn’t been updated,” said Munger.

A building more than 100 years old comes with a lot of history. In 1975, rock band KISS took a picture in front of one of the entrances when they made a stop in Cadillac to perform.

“Initially, it was the fire station way back in the day, and many people know it as the firehouse where kiss throw it out on the fire truck,” said Morin.

But several years before KISS made a stop, the fire station had horses. Their stalls were in the basement, which were restored during the renovation.

“I think this building is going to be one of these historic buildings that 100 years from now, somebody else will be doing something with, and hopefully, I’ve been able to preserve the time capsule for somebody,” said Munger.

Now, more than ten businesses occupy the Old City Hall, making their mark.
