MSP Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting in Cheboygan County

UPDATE:

The Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Department has released new details regarding an officer-involved shooting in Cheboygan County.

On Thursday around 11:52 a.m., deputies were dispatched at the request of a family member to a home in Ellis Township for a welfare check on a woman.

They say the family member had received a text message from the woman that she was in trouble with a person known to her, and needed immediate help.

Upon entrance into the home, deputies were attacked by a 32-year-old man with a hatchet, striking one of the deputies.

Deputies responded in accordance with departmental policy and training, shooting the man. The man was later declared dead.

The Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Department says the Sheriff Deputy is being treated for his injuries at a local hospital, and is expected to make a full recovery.

According to Sheriff Clarmont, this was an isolated incident and there is no other immediate threat to the public.

Sheriff Clarmont requested the help of Michigan State Police to investigate the incident.

The incident remains under investigation.

Michigan State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Cheboygan County.

According to MSP, a deputy responding to a residence was attacked. The deputy sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The deputy is expected to be released Thursday.

MSP has confirmed that the suspect, a 32-year-old man, is deceased.
