Michiganders Spend Time Volunteering on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Food Rescue, a program of Goodwill Northern Michigan, is helping with food waste.

They collect unwanted food from grocery stores, farms and food processors and deliver it to people in need.

“I really enjoy meeting people out in the community and so on Martin Luther King Junior Day, it’s important to honor his legacy and do all that we can to help those in our community that might not have what we have,” said Marisa Hrbal, a volunteer at Food Rescue.

Volunteers spent Martin Luther King Jr. day packaging pounds of produce.

“We had beets, carrots, potatoes that we repacked about 2,400 pounds of fresh produce and few other 1,000 pounds of broccoli,” said Taylor Moore, Manager at Food Rescue.

In total, 3,000 pounds of food that was packed will turn into 3,000 meals and will be in families’ fridges on Tuesday.

Moore says it is all about showing up, and folks did show up on Monday.

“Volunteering has always been like a part of who I am, and I really enjoy giving back and being a part of the community,” said Hrbal.

People also spent Martin Luther King Jr. day volunteering at several other organizations, including Tart Trails, Notre and The Opera House in Traverse City.
