First Omicron Case Detected in Newaygo County

District Health Department #10 (DHD#10) announced Tuesday their first case of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in a resident residing in Newaygo County.

The CDC says the Omicron variant is especially concerning because it will likely spread more easily. According to the CDC, how easily Omicron spreads, compared to the Delta variant, remains unknown.

“While one case may seem low, the possibility for this variant to spread quickly is much higher,” said Kevin Hughes, Health Officer of DHD#10, in a statement. “Unfortunately, at home test kits cannot tell us whether or not an individual has the Omicron variant, so we need to remain vigilant in testing, vaccination, and following recommended guidelines.”
