Hook and Hunting: Ice Fishing Safety

Ice fishing is a favorite pastime for many in northern Michigan, but it still might be too early to ice fish in many places.

With excitement and anticipation building to get out on the ice, safety is key when fishing early in the season. It is important to play it safe and assume that no ice is safe ice.

“Use your ice spud every step,” said Christopher Knaisel, Pilgrim Village Fishing Shop manager. “You don’t know what’s going on. Even if you see somebody out there ice fishing, don’t assume the ice is safe. Hit every step. You got to make sure you know what you’re walking on. And they make ice spikes, so if you do fall in you can claw your way up.”

Ice forms at different rates, so it’s important to check with your local sheriff’s office or bait shops for information on local ice safety on the lakes.
