Pope Francis has appointed a new bishop to the Diocese of Gaylord.

Reverend Jeffrey Walsh wasn’t sure exactly where Gaylord was at first, but after receiving the call that he was offered the title of bishop at the Diocese of Gaylord, it was an easy decision.

“It felt like an out of body experience, like it wasn’t happening to me,” said Walsh. “I guess it’s common, talking to other bishops, that when you get that phone call it really is a surreal type of experience that takes time to sort out in your mind.”

As bishop, Walsh will look over 70 parish churches in the area.

“It’s his responsibility to oversee that, to create a vision for the diocese to move forward and to move into the future with all the challenges that are present in our world today,” said Bishop Walter Hurley.

While excited to bring his experience to Gaylord, Walsh said he’ll be taking it slow at first.

“I’m gonna learn,” says Walsh. “I think it’s always sage advice for a pastor when he moves into a new parish to give it a year, to go through a whole cycle, to get a sense of the culture of the people and what works and what doesn’t work.”

Walsh is scheduled to be officially appointed as sixth bishop in the Diocese of Gaylord on March 4th.
