Northwest Michigan Health Services in Traverse City started distributing the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine to children 5-11 years old.

“I think it’s real exciting that we’re hitting this population right now,” said Tammy Sorensen, Director of Community Health and Operations. “The only difference is it is a little bit smaller of a dose.”

The health organization is taking appointments online, and asking parents to bring their children in short sleeves and shorts.

“We’re going to need to access some of the legs at times for the younger children to get to the thigh muscle to give that administration of the vaccine,” said Sorensen. “We’re asking the kids to come in shorts and short sleeves so that we can assess whether the arm is better for them or the leg.”

Northwest Michigan Health Services are holding clinics the rest of the week.

On Wednesday, clinics will be held at their locations in Benzonia, Traverse City, and Shelby from 10-6.

On Thursday, a clinic will be held at their Traverse City location from 1-5.

The vaccines are by appointment. You can schedule one at their website .

New scheduling will be updated late Friday before the coming week
