NW Michigan Health Services Begins COVID Vaccine Clinics For Children

Northwest Michigan Health Services will begin covid vaccine clinics for children ages five to 11-years-old.

They say clinics are scheduled starting Tuesday and will be held through the week in Traverse City, Benzonia, and Shelby.

This comes after the CDC and the FDA recently approved the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for use in kids. The health department says the vaccine is one-third the adult dose and will require a second dose in three weeks.

The vaccine has been proved to be nearly 91% effective in preventing symptomatic infections.

“This is a tremendously important tool in our effort to get back to normal in the middle of a pandemic,” said Tammy Sorensen, NMHSI Director of Community Health and Operations. “While the risk of serious illness is reduced with children, we still see too many hospitalizations and deaths within this age group.”

Northwest Michigan Health Services says appointments will initially be required and can be made online They say no adult vaccines will be given at the pediatric clinics.

They say children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and must have proof of their date of birth. Additionally, Northwest Michigan Health Services states the clinics will be drive-up curbside events and the kids are asked to wear shorts and a short sleeve shirt under warmer clothing.
