DHD#10, GTCHD To Begin Offering COVID-19 Vaccines To Children Ages 5-11

District Health Department #10 (DHD#10) and the Grand Traverse County Health Department (GTCHD) say they are beginning to offer the COVID-19 vaccine to children ages 5 to 11-years-old.

This comes after the CDC recommended the use of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine in kids ages 5-11 as a second dose series taken three weeks apart on Tuesday.

The Grand Traverse County Health Department will be releasing vaccine appointments Thursday for the week of Nov. 8-12. They will be closed Thursday, Nov. 11 in observance of Veteran’s Day.

GTCHD states that, in recognizing the challenges that come with immunizations in children, all pediatric appointments made will be conducted at the main health department building at 2600 LaFranier Road in Traverse City, and not the Cherryland Clinic.

Individuals who are not in the 5-11 age group will continue to be vaccinated at the Cherryland Clinic located at 1700 S. Garfield Avenue in Traverse City.

District Health Department #10 states will begin offering COVID-19 vaccines to kids ages 5-11 starting Monday, Nov. 8 at their vaccine clinics by appointment. They say there is no cost to individuals.

“We anticipated this approval would happen and are ready to begin administering the COVID-19 to this age group,” said Kevin Hughes, Health Officer for DHD#10. “Vaccination continues to be our best tool for protecting individuals from serious illness and limiting the impact of COVID overall. Combining vaccination with non-medical interventions like masks, distance, and isolation or quarantine, provides as much protection as possible.”

DHD#10 says that a parent or guardian must be present when minors are vaccinated, and COVID-19 vaccines for children are expected to be widely available.
