According to the CDC, 1 in 8 couples have trouble getting pregnant or sustaining a pregnancy. It is so common, and one Mid-Michigan couple is part of the 7.4-million people that are unable to have children. After experiencing the physical and emotional trauma, they decided to turn their personal story into a wide-open discussion and theatrical play about infertility.

The inspiration for “1 in 8: The Hope Zone” came about while Emily Aslakson was undergoing unsuccessful in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. The play tells not only her story, but the stories of so many incredible women that she met throughout her journey. She and her spouse, Philip Himebaugh hopes it will help normalize talking about infertility.

“We started IVF treatments, and then we did one cycle in October that sadly ended in a pregnancy loss,” said Emily. “Writing was kind of my way of coping”.

“We want to help other couples realize ‘hey man, been there, done that, you’re not alone, you know let me know if I can assist you in any way,’ and I feel like Emily script does a fantastic job,” Philip mentioned.
