Dominican Sisters Return to Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools

For the first time in 20 years, Dominican Sisters will be teaching at both Traverse City St. Francis High School and Immaculate Conception.

The Dominican Sisters of Saint Cecilia sent four sisters to Traverse City.

In the Catholic school’s 144-year history, sisters have been a big part of their education.

The long-standing tradition of having at least one consecrated woman among faculty has been upheld until the retirement of Sister Lydia in the early 2000s.

Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools interim superintendent Erick Chittle says it will not only make their school system whole again but also benefit all of Traverse City.

“It’s a blessing for the whole Catholic community to have that witness of these sisters in their white habits walking around and biking around town with their rosaries hanging will bring new life and energy to the community in general,” Chittle said.

Two sisters will be teaching at each school. Immaculate Conception starts school on Sept. 7, while St. Francis begins on Sept. 8.
