Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office Continues Investigation of Fatal Crash in Glen Arbor

We have new details about a fiery weekend crash that left a Suttons Bay teenager dead and a business in ruins.

The Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fire at Crystal River Outfitters around 6:30 a.m. Saturday. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they discovered a car with a body inside.

The sheriff’s office says the vehicle, a 2013 Honda Civic, was heading east on West River Road and was speeding before exciting the roadway to the right and traveling through an unimproved area along the river before crashing into Crystal River Outfitters and coming to a rest.

The vehicle sustained significant damage as a result of the crash and subsequently started on fire.

Investigators say a 19-year-old from Suttons Bay was behind the wheel and the only occupant in the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Our hearts go out to everybody,” said Leelanau County Sheriff Michael Borkovich. “It’s tough for Glen Lake as a community, it’s tough for the business owners who lost their business, it’s tough for the family especially.”

The crash remains under investigation. Speed is believed to have played a factor in the crash.
