A traveling artist that moves with the seasons, has found inspiration from all over the world, including Michigan’s beautiful Upper Peninsula. She shares how she creates her colorful and vibrant mixed-media works in this Artist Profile.
Who are you?
Hi, I’m Ginnie Cappaert! I’m an artist. I work out of Michigan and Wisconsin, and I work in oil and cold wax paintings.
How did you get started?
I’ve always been creative. I had a friend sit down with me 30 years ago, and teach me some basics in watercolor painting, and that just ignited the flame in me for a creative life. And, I’ve been a full-time artist for 25 years.
What is your favorite medium?
For the past decade, I’ve been working in oil and cold wax. And, cold wax is just a medium that is added to oil paints to make it more spreadable instead of brushable. So, I use a lot of palette knives, scrapers, and rollers to create layers that I scratch into.
Where do you find inspiration?
Well, nature is my number one inspiration. But, my travels also play into that. The different landscapes that I travel to, like Michigan and Sante Fe, inspire my work.
What do you hope people take from your work?
Most importantly, I want them to interact with it. Maybe, find a sense of place, and peace, and serenity.
