With the lack of rain comes an increased danger of wildfire.
But something you may not know is that Michigan is part of the mutual aid box alarm system, or MABAS.
MABAS is an agreement between fire departments and EMS agencies to help provide resources to each other during a big or significant event such as wildfires.
Local fire departments say it’s a major help.
“When something happens when, those multiple calls, when those big events like the wildland fire down in Wexford, when we have to call in a lot of different resources that there’s help coming. But also if we don’t have that capability, if there’s something that comes in that is outside of our range, we would be able to call downstairs and get a team headed our way to help us if we needed to,” said Bill Parker, Fire Chief of Blair Township Fire Department and Planning Coordinator of MABAS.
MABAS started in Illinois and has since been growing in Wisconsin, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri and right here in Michigan.
