Federal and state leaders have said for a year that a vaccine would be the road out of the pandemic. As Michigan’s vaccination rate sputters short of its goals, First Lady Jill Biden visited to help jumpstart the efforts.

Biden visited a pop-up vaccination clinic at Grand Rapids Community College Thursday. The First Lady spoke with those on hand to get their shots and push for more Americans to get their vaccines and move the country closer to the 70% vaccination rate goal set by her husband, President Joe Biden.

“Families are returning to work and to school,” said Biden, “Businesses are reopening and we’re getting back to the things that that we missed for so long.”

Those who wanted the vaccine the most, got their shot.

Those that needed the vaccine, got their shot.

Those who trust the vaccine, got their shot.

Biden knows there are many reasons why the remaining Americans haven’t gotten theirs but believes trust in the vaccine should not be a legitimate reason.

“Talk to your doctors, your healthcare providers and they will tell you that the studies are clear,” said Biden, “This is all based on science, the vaccine is safe and effective.”

Michigan cruised to the 50% barrier but it has slowed since.

“We really need to be focusing on communicating actual risks and being honest with folks,” said Representative Peter Meijer, who also toured the vaccination site.

President Biden has set a goal  to hit 70% by the 4th of July but at the current rate, that will be difficult. Representative Meijer thinks it may not matter.

“I think, regardless when you see those case rates continue to go down, then reopening is all but assured,” said Meijer.

Ultimately that’s the real goal, no matter how we get there.

“We’ll be able to spend this summer the way we should,” said Biden, “Spend it together.”

After her stop in Grand Rapids, Biden took off toward Kansas City for a similar event, showing that it’s not just Michigan where they are seeing to slow down but an issue across the country.
