New Coronavirus Variant Found In Kent County

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services say they have found a person in Kent County that has tested positive for the new, more contagious variant of COVID-19 from the United Kingdom.

They say the variant is about 50% more transmissible, leading to faster spread of the virus.

The MDHHS has identified 30 cases of the B.1.1.7 variant in Michigan, but this is the first case discovered outside of the Metro Detroit area.

The Kent County Health Department is encouraging individuals to get tested for the coronavirus if they have traveled out of Michigan within the last fourteen days, especially to areas where new variants are spreading.

So far, the MDHHS has identified 30 cases of the new variant in Michigan.
