Strange yet somehow beautiful is the best way to describe the artwork produced by ceramicist, Lisa Farris. We get a preview of her latest gallery and her inspiration behind these ceramic creations in this ‘Artist Profile’.

Who are you?

“My name is Lisa Farris, and I live in Bloomfield Township, Michigan.”

What is your favorite medium?

“When I was at U of M – I actually did a lot of drawing, painting, and printmaking, and I only did a little bit of ceramics. But as soon as I was done with Michigan, I went back and took classes at OCC. It’s when you’re starting off in clay, you kind of need a facility because you don’t necessarily have the kilns or the kind of equipment, but it ended up being great because it just supplemented my education to do that so I’d say now I’m almost exclusively ceramic.”

What was your inspiration?

“I do abstract figurative sculptures, and for a while when my kids were little, I was really just blown away by their drawings of themselves, like the way a preschooler draws a figure. It was so joyful and funny, and I loved the juxtaposition of like really great big heads.  So, I kind of started ripping them off – like making sculptures that were very childlike and abstract of the figure.”

What do you want people to know about your artwork?

“I want people to think about their own joy. I think I make happy art.”
