Many areas of the state are reopening portions of their economies, but that doesn’t mean we’re done with COVID-19.

It’s still prevalent in our state and is surging in some spots.

Let’s take a look at how northern Michigan’s hardest hit counties are dealing with the virus.

For months, Otsego County was northern Michigan’s hot spot for COVID-19.

The month of April saw a surge in that county.

But since the start of May, there have been just 10 new cases in Otsego County.

Alpena County has flattened its curve in a similar way.

In the last two weeks of April, COVID-19 cases jumped there. But since May 1, they’ve seen just 13 new cases.

Isabella County is also one of the areas hit hardest in northern Michigan, but it’s been a steady increase there for the last few months. The county has had 78 total cases of COVID-19.

Now, let’s take a look at some of the areas seeing a surge right now.

Newaygo County now has the most cases in our viewing area with 108. Seventy new cases have been confirmed in just the last few weeks.

Oceana County is also seeing a similar increase in COVID-19 numbers.

89 cases have been confirmed within its boundaries, after having just 11 cases at the start of May.

All of this goes to show that while some areas in northern Michigan have kept the virus at bay, others are still seeing spikes in cases even though the state as a whole is seeing numbers go down.
