Grand Traverse Conservation District: Encouraging People to Plant Native Seedlings and #StayHome with Nature

The countdown is on to get those seeds in the ground— planting season is upon us! Every year, the Grand Traverse Conservation District encourages people to purchase native plants and seedlings.

Katie Grzesiak, the Invasive Species Network Coordinator explains the importance of these native plant sales. “These are the species that are not only really well adapted to our northern Michigan habitats, but they can also take our sandy soils, they can take our cold winters, our hot summers, the wet springs— they’re all set up for all of that.”

The Grand Traverse Conservation District is not only encouraging you to plant native plants but they’re encouraging you to get outside! The Boardman River Nature Center has a campaign called #StayHome with Nature, which is encouraging families to get outside in any capacity they can safely, offering resources and activities for families.

Taryn Carew, the education/camp director at the Boardman River Nature Center says, “Just recently, this week we started talking about ramps— wild onions that grow in the forest. A lot of people don’t know what they are, they walk right by them and they don’t know.”

If you are looking for some guidance on how to get the whole family engaged with nature for the remainder of the stay-at-home order,
