Have you ever looked through a history textbook? If you answered yes, how many women do you remember seeing in those books? Probably not many… The Midland Center for the Arts is celebrating and recognizing women in their new Sister Exhibits 20/20 Vision Seeing HERStory and Redefining Representation.

Jennifer Vannette, the Curator of the 20/20 Vision Exhibit says, “This exhibit takes the last 100 or so years of women’s history. We touched off with the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote.”

There are several themes and sections throughout the exhibit highlighting women in work, voices raised, local change-makers, community builders, international connections, women in war and an Arts/story-telling room. Through this exhibit, there are 67 local women featured. “In each section, you’ll find history and then you’ll find local women that represent what’s happening today,” explains Vannette.

Whether these women are serving in Congress, heading up their household, or contributing to their community, the curators for the exhibit have one simple wish — that everyone leaves truly seeing HERStory in history.

Vannette said, “I hope that especially young women take away a sense of empowerment and know their voice has power and that they can use it.”
