Heavy Snow Causes Thousands of Power Outages

All of this winter weather is leaving thousands throughout northern Michigan without power.

It could take crews some time to restore it.

In just under 24 hours, areas such as Crawford County got tons of snow.

While this is causing some issues out on the roads, it’s also causing some power outages but crews are continuing to work to bring power back to the hardest hit areas which include Crawford County.

“We have all crews on hand working their hardest to restore power to our members but it’s tricky to estimate restoration times because we can’t predict weather,” said Lacey Matthews the manager of communication and marketing at Great Lakes Energy.

For some, power has been on and off and with more winter weather expected to come through, the issue may not go away.

A Frederic Township business owner says he was shocked to see all the snow.

“It’s incredible what’s happened in the past 24 hours,” said Pete Kocefas, owner of Sledheads of Frederic.

He’s thrilled about the snow and so are some snowmobilers taking advantage of it.

“Thank you, snow gods,” said Kocefas. “Yeah snowmobile business is going to pick up now. I mean nobody would’ve dreamed with the conditions that we had yesterday, nobody would’ve dreamed that this would’ve happened.”

While many welcome the snow, the Frederic Fire Department has some important safety reminders.

“If you see a power line down, call 9-1-1,” said Lt. Allen Ballard. “If your power does go out in your home, we ask that you not run generators on the inside because it’ll build up carbon monoxide in your home.”

“Make sure that you have blankets in your car. You have a flashlight in your car. Make sure that they have good batteries in them as well,” said Ballard.

If you are still out of power, make sure you’re taking the proper precautions to be safe and be warm. Crews will be out again tomorrow to make sure you get that power back on.
