CMU Working to Make Flame Retardants Safer

Researchers at Central Michigan University have been working to make flame retardants less toxic.

Many flame retardant chemicals are harmful if they ever ignite.

They can also pollute the environment once they’re discarded.

A research team at CMU recently started looking to find a less harmful solution.

They used acids found in plants, fruits and buckwheat to create an environmentally friendly flame retardant.

“It could make a huge difference.  What we’ve been able to do is make these compounds and to demonstrate their flame retarding ability using laboratory tests and we’ve made laboratory-scale quantities,” said Dr. Bob Howell.

Central also has students trained and working in the flame retardant industry.
