Tuesday morning ground was broken on a new elementary school for the Chippewa Hills School District.

Thanks to a bond proposal passing in 2015, the district has renovated facilities at other buildings but the biggest piece of the project was saved for last, a brand new Barryton Elementary school. It will be built right behind the current elementary school.

Weidman and Mecosta Elementaries are getting renovations and additions but when it came to Barryton, the best option was to build anew.

“When the cost were very similar, we decided to go with a new building,” says Bob Grover, superintendent of Chippewa Hills, “Take down the old building and essentially offer new opportunities to our kids. It will be more technologically integrated and also offer independent study space not just classrooms.”

The new school is scheduled to be done in time for the first day of school in the Fall of 2020.
