Dog Tales: A Furry Audience Encouraging Children to Read

A new best friend for your child that encourages them to read. The only caveat is, this best friend has four legs and a tail! Dog Tales is a nonprofit that works with children on their reading while using therapy dogs as “literacy mentors” and is taking place at schools and the Pere Marquette Library in Clare.

Betty Lewis, the founder and coordinator who has worked in education for years says dogs break down a child’s wall faster than she ever can. “Dogs let us get a quick rapport – like instant. They’re your best friend as soon as you see them.”

Reading aloud, whether that be in front of the classroom or to mom and dad can sometimes be scary to a child who is just learning but the dogs are there all ears and zero expectations. A great beginner audience.

“We’ve had parents tell us that they couldn’t get them to pick up a book and practice before they joined the program but afterwards they can’t get the kid to put the book down,” says Lewis.

Mothers like Megan Kennedy are really seeing the value in this program. “What better program to bring your child to than one where they’re reading and reading with a dog? It’s the coolest thing you know?”

This program is giving kids a confidence boost and is turning them into little bookworms. So ditch the iPad or TV remote and hand them a book.

“A book’s battery will never die. They will always have it to go to,” says Kennedy.
