As Holiday Travel Begins, Mt. Pleasant Holds State’s Cheapest Gas

No matter the weather, people will be hitting the road and should be satisfied with the costs. Gas prices are down 30 cents on average nationwide in the last 2 months. This morning we saw prices below $2 a gallon once again.

“Michigan’s gas prices, on average ,have not gone up since October 25,” says Gas Buddy founder, Patrick DeHaan.

The holidays mean more travel and more travel means more fuel. At least for now, that doesn’t mean outrageous costs. Gas prices are down across the country and especially here in Michigan, for once.

“Michigan is not one of the lower states in the country,” says DeHaan, “In fact, their gas taxes rank in the top 10 of all states.”

The reasons for the national drop are mainly political and based on sanctions in the Middle East but that didn’t explain why some stations in Mount Pleasant this morning were ultra low, down below $2 again.

“It’s competition,” says DeHaan, “If your competition goes a penny under you, you may go a penny under them and then it’s kind of a price war.”

It’s wasn’t a city wide thing because there are some stations in Mt. Pleasant that were still $2.25. The lowest stations had people lined up all morning, waiting to get filled up.

“They are probably selling anywhere from 20-30 cents under cost and that probably won’t last very long,” says DeHaan.

They didn’t. Prices are already up to $2.09 but that’s still the lowest in the state. If you are hitting the highway this week, you are best to fill up soon, the price dip is probably coming to an end.

“It’s possible that we do see one of these infamous price cycles in the next couple of days,” says DeHaan.
