Big Rapids Woman Recalls Houston Flooding

The devastating flooding caused by Harvey has people in northern Michigan with connections to Houston checking in on friends and family.

Lindsay Barber made it through two floods during her five years living in Houston, but she says this one is a whole new ball game for everyone.

“Just taking it one minute, one day at a time,” said Barber.

That’s how Lindsay Barber made it through the floods she experienced in Houston, but she says the images from there now are nothing like what she endured.

“I’m seeing areas I used to drive where water is up to the stoplights, that’s something I never saw while I was there and never thought I would see. I don’t know how they could have prepared for this,” said Barber.

She spent the day checking Facebook making sure people she knows are safe and so far everyone is. But, they have a long road ahead.

“People in Houston are extremely tough, extremely tough. There’s still a lot of rain to come so making sure everyone is remaining safe and has everything they need, that’s their main concern down there as well,” said Barber.

The Salvation Army in Big Rapids says the biggest need right now is donations of money.

“The greatest need right now is being able to buy food water and the other supplies that are needed to help the victims of the hurricane. The people that are effected the most, when you walk up to them, they look maybe totally normal, but their life is broken and they’ve lost everything and in most cases they don’t have a home to go back to, they don’t have food, they don’t have water,” said Development Director  Chris Vallette

FEMA estimates 30,000 people will need some sort of housing as a result of the storm and continued flooding.
