World Reacts After U.S. Launches Cruise Missiles At Syrian Airfield

The world is reacting after President Donald Trump ordered U.S. forces to attack Syria, saying the images of innocent people choking on poison gas moved him to take action.

U.S. allies strongly support President Trump’s decision to strike Syria’s airbase, saying it was an appropriate response to this week’s deadly chemical attack.

Nations that back Syria say the U.S. bombing violated international law.

Overnight, U.S. warships launched 59 cruise missiles at the Syrian airbase believed to have launched the deadly chemical attack.

According to the Pentagon, the airstrikes left the airbase unusable and that no further action is called for unless Syria uses chemical weapons again.

We reached out to a number of lawmakers representing our area to discuss the Syria strike.

Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow says, "The Syrian people have endured horrendous atrocities at the hands of their government, and the latest chemical weapons attack against innocent children and their families demands a response. The Trump administration must ensure that further U.S. action is part of a clear strategy and policy that includes diplomatic coordination with our allies, as well as input from Congress. I stand behind our service members involved in last night’s military action and commend their bravery."

We also heard from Republican Representative Bill Huizenga, from the state’s Second District.

“President Trump’s decision to take decisive and targeted action against Syria is the leadership the United States must demonstrate. Bashar al-Assad has used chemical weapons against defenseless men, women and children, which is absolutely unacceptable. The world must stand against this evil,” says Congressman Huizenga.

While Syria and its closest allies condemn the U.S. missile attack, Syrian rebel groups say they are happy America intervened because it may stop the Syrian regime from bombing them.

In Turkey, officials are calling for a no-fly zone in northern Syria to prevent more deadly gas attack.

World leaders in Europe, including Britain, France, Germany and Italy are united around the decision to target Syria’s government airbase, something Britain calls the right response to a barbaric attack.

Additionally, NATO says the Syrian regime bears full responsibility for the U.S. missile strike.

U.S. airstrikes in Syria are creating uncertainty in the global financial markets.

Oil prices have spiked.

The strike could also create tension with Russia, another major oil producer.
