Traverse City Mourns Loss of Hockey Legend Gordie Howe

The death of Mr. Hockey has people all over the state, all over the country, feeling the loss.

That includes Traverse City.

Gordie and his wife Colleen called the city home in the late 70’s and 80’s.

The ice rink at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center is even named after him.

People in the area say they cherish the memories of his community involvement and presence during Red Wings training camp.

That’s why naming the rink after Howe was an easy decision.

“You can’t say enough about Gordie Howe and how accommodating he was to everybody,” says Dennis Fedorinchik, general contractor of Howe Arena. “That’s really, I think, his legacy beyond his hockey abilities is how accessible he was. Just truly a gentleman off the ice.”
