Fox Topix: Pets In Hot Cars

Should there be stiffer penalties for people who leave their pets in hot cars? Why or why not?

The Michigan Senate is considering bills that would make it a felony instead of a misdemeanor for leaving your pet in a car during extreme weather.

Right now, under Michigan law, if you leave your pet in a hot car, you could get 93 days in jail on a neglect charge.  If your pet dies, that penalty is bumped up to a year in jail.

Under the new legislation, that would jump to a five year felony or a $5,000 fine.
