Should there be stiffer penalties for people who leave their pets in hot cars? Why or why not?
The Michigan Senate is considering bills that would make it a felony instead of a misdemeanor for leaving your pet in a car during extreme weather.
Right now, under Michigan law, if you leave your pet in a hot car, you could get 93 days in jail on a neglect charge. If your pet dies, that penalty is bumped up to a year in jail.
Under the new legislation, that would jump to a five year felony or a $5,000 fine.
