Bill Aims to Reduce Federal Beer Tax

A break could be in store for small brewing companies if the federal government passes a bill to reduce federal taxes on beer. Currently, any small brewers who produce less than 60,000 barrels a year are taxed $7 a barrel. This bill would cut that in half to $3.50 per barrel. Joe Short, owner of Short's Brewing Company in Bellaire and Elk Rapids says extra money would put to use within the company to help it grow. Anything between 60,000 and 6-million barrels would be taxed $16 per barrel under this legislation, down from the current $18 per barrel. 9&10's Christina Vecchioni and photojournalist Aaron Smith have more details on what this could mean for the small craft brewing industry.
