LSSU Women’s Hockey Captures First CCWHA Championship in Just Second Season

SAULT STE. MARIE – In just their second season in the Division II ACHA, the Lake Superior State women’s club hockey team took home the 2022 CCWHA Tournament Championship earlier this month.

The Lakers did not win a single game last season, but they turned it around to finish year two with a 26-3-1 record.

LSSU also had two out of the top three point leaders in the nation in all categories in their league.

The win sends Lake Superior State to the ACHA National Tournament in St. Louis, Missouri which begins this weekend. The team said it’s been incredible to receive the support from the community and inspire the next generation of female hockey players.

“I honestly didn’t know how good we would be. Last year, we lost every game. So then this year going into it and winning our first game was an amazing feeling. I’ve seen so many people in the stands supporting us, and I think it’s really cool to have another women’s program for a little girls to look up to,” said Lake Superior State senior and Sault Ste. Marie HS alum Meghan Gerrie.

LSSU is also currently ranked as the No. 1 team in the nation for Division II.
