New Petoskey-Harbor Springs Community Foundation Project Aims to Help with Housing Crisis

The Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation is looking to help out with the housing crisis in the community.

They recently stepped in to help Harbor Springs Developer Haan Development acquire an Emmet Street property in Petoskey that will allow them to build a new apartment complex for those in the area.

The project is aimed to help those looking for employment in the area, but are having a hard time finding a place to live. It also helps local businesses that are suffering from short-staffing.

The proposed project is a 60-unit complex called “Lofts at Lumber Square.” Without tax credits to fund the project, it may have stopped there, but the community foundation stepped in, using their money from their Emmet Housing Solutions Fund to make the project happen.

“We know that housing is one of the biggest needs in our community right now, the employers are having trouble attracting workforce and retaining workforce, and so while we know that 60 units is not going to solve all of our housing needs, we do think it’s going to make a significant impact for those employers who are looking to hire employees who have no place to live right now,”  said Sarah Ford, director of Community Philanthropy at Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation.

The community foundation says an estimated date for completion is yet to come as they are still in the early stages of financing and planning.
