He’s part artist and part activist when it comes to his work. Traverse City’s Rufus Snoddy uses a unique style of painting and sculpting, and we learned the inspiration behind it in this Artist Profile.

Who are you?

My name is Rufus Snoddy, and I am from Traverse City, and I am a painter, sculptor.

How did you get started?

I got started doing art, when I was a kid, actually, that’s when I first got interested. My brother was in the army, and he would write letters. And, whenever he wrote the letters, he would always do a little sketch of wherever he was or his fellow soldiers. I just thought he was a brilliant genius guy and I wanted to do what he did.

What is your favorite medium?

So, what I like to do, is to grow structures to build and paint on. My works you can call them paintings or sculptures, but they’re hybrids.

Where do you find inspiration?

I’m inspired by my environment, things that are going on around me.  Nature is very inspiring for me in terms of the colors and the kinds of textures that I like to put in my work. But, conceptually, I am trying to reflect on what’s in my world. Some of the things that are going on in my world. They’re visual metaphors.

What do you want people to take away from your art?

I just hope that it inspires people emotionally, I hope that it connects them in some way. And also, that they will focus on and appreciate some of the processes. A lot of time goes into that. A lot of time, and a lot of creativity.

Rufus Snoddy’s artworks can be seen at in Traverse City, and at in Elk Rapids. To stay up to date with his next artistic adventure, .
