While the thought of planning for life after high school is very exciting for many students, there is a lot of apprehension.

For many, a lot of that nervous energy is tied to standardized tests like the SAT. But at Ferris State University, a new admission program says it’s not all about the numbers.

FSU is the only public university in Michigan to admit students based on their GPA without looking at SAT scores.

It’s called the “test-optional approach,” and it’s new to the school this year.

“Data that we have that suggests that the GPA is a better predictor of college  success than the SAT or the ACT,” says FSU President Dr. David Eisler.

FSU currently has more than 100 students who are taking part in school’s pilot program of the test-optional approach.

“We are going to give them special advising and we are going to use an ACCUPLACER test to help them figure out which math or English class they should be in,” Eisler says. “We want to see how this works as we make it a part of our admissions process.”
